6 Reasons Pre-Owned Clothing Is The Old-School Cool

I have a confession: I am a MAJOR thrift addict.

It doesn’t matter whether they were designer goodies or high-street brands, I will buy whatever pleases the eyes; but they’re all used clothing. Why am I so crazy about buying used clothing? It all started when I watched the documentary about the hazards of fast fashion, The True Cost (2015). Here’s the full documentary for you to watch after reading this article:

Not to virtue-signalling, but after watching the documentary, it haunted me for years. Every time I stepped into a fast fashion chain and grabbed whatever piece of clothing that caught my attention, the first few things that came onto my mind were “Did a child make this?” or “Were the workers treated fairly?” or “How many hours did it take for the workers to complete each garment?” and something along those lines.

I watched the documentary as soon as it was released back in 2015. But it wasn’t until the start of the pandemic that I was able to fully ditched consuming fast fashion and opted to buying used clothing instead. I’ve never been to any fast fashion outlet ever since. Also, it’s super thrilling to browse online for used goodies; not knowing what kind of delightful things await you.

I am a very happy owner of many preowned designer goodies (all authentic); such as the Kate Spade Book Clutch (which I bought for only US$11; the RRP was US$330!), the Dolce & Gabbana Queen of Hearts Pencil Skirt (bought for US$14; RRP US$1k++), and many more! It was such a serendipitous moment for me when I found such gems!

I personally prefer to shop online at e-commerce marketplaces that sell secondhand branded clothing and vintage items or designer resale sites, such as etsy, ebay, Carousell, Refash.my, Looop.Fun, and Thryft.Asia. 85 per cent of the clothing, books, furniture, and decorative items at my house are preowned, antique, and/or vintage.

I suppose you can compare the feeling to when you’re getting high on psychedelics; the euphoric feeling is off the charts!

Okay, if this isn’t convincing enough for you, check out these six reasons why buying used clothing is the old-school cool:

1. Cost-effective:

Buying used clothing is often much less expensive than buying new clothing, which can help you save money.

2. Styles that stand out:

Preowned clothing frequently includes unique and rare items that are no longer available in stores, which can help you stand out from the crowd.

3. Sustainable:

Buying used clothing reduces the demand for new clothing production, which helps to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

4. High-quality:

Because many used clothing items have already been worn and washed several times, they have been tested for durability and quality.

5. Vintage appeal:

Preowned clothing frequently contains vintage and retro pieces that can add a nostalgic touch to your wardrobe.

6. Supports small businesses:

Many used clothing stores are small, independent businesses that rely on customer support to stay open. By shopping at these locations, you are supporting local businesses and assisting in their survival.
